Back to happiness
I did a blogpiece on happiness a couple of weeks ago and the metrics indicate that it attracted more than the usual number of lurking readers. So I thought I'd continue in similar vein and alert you - albeit belatedly - to a good article by Matthew Syed which appeared in Times2 on Wednesday 21 May called Gordon Brown - is that all there is? You can access it at Times Online by searching under the author's name for recent articles he's written.
Syed ruminates on the melancholy which can, allegedly, follow a career-defining triumph with (of course) the current mental state of poor old Gordo in mind. There are several quotable quotes in the article and I particularly like this one from Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl: "Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself." Interesting: if you search for happiness you won't find it; but if you dedicate yourself to something (or someone) you believe in, then happiness may well ensue. I think there's something in that - so I though I'd share it with you.
