Hot off the press I see that Philip Reeve has won the Carnegie Medal for ‘Here Lies Arthur’ and Emily Gravett won the Kate Greenaway Medal for ‘Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears’. I haven't read this Philip Reeve's book, but he is one of a current collection of authors that really appeal to boys, which is great. The Emily Gravett book is enchanting and is so well designed that children find new things to see everytime they look at it. I was looking at 'Image and Imagination: 50 Years of the Kate Greenaway Medal' the other day (YLG publication) and although styles of illustrations for children's books have changed over the years, the medal has always gone to great strong designs and visual imagery. This award is certainly the most fun for the judging panel AND the most important. Great books for the next generation of readers!

Congratulations to these authors.

I've been risking my eyesight this week poring over the Queen's Birthday Honours List. My job, to find the librarians and information workers honoured for their contribution to society. Well, I did find a few. It reminds me that we are still an unappreciated and unassuming bunch, and I suspect that the success of a great many of those on the list was helped by information workers in libraries and research centres. Our satisfaction comes from good work done, but we do need to advocate, shout about what we can contribute and make sure that our skills are appreciated!

Well done to Susan Wilkinson librarian at H M Prison Birmingham and Christine Fretten at the House of Commons, both CILIP members and now MBEs.

Ahh, the Bookseller, my weekly read, has produced an interesting little irony.  A former chartered librarian writes about the demise of chartered librarian posts in many public library authorities, a serious issue covered in the Conway Report http://www.cilip.org.uk/policyadvocacy/statements/conwayreport/.  She also points out the author of this report headed an authority that failed to "ensure that chartership is vital to the effective management and promotion of the service".

I've just been reading the latest IDS Pay Report looking at the three months to the end of April the average settlement is around 3.8 per cent.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6645615.stm  As you are probably aware those in the public sector are likely to get less!  An article earlier this week shows public sector pay deals at 2.7% and RPI inflation at 4.2%
http://www.epolitix.com/latestnews/article-detail/newsarticle/public-sectors-workers-rally-in-westminster/
The trend as you are probably aware at the moment is for inflation to continue rising.

We've just updated the various salary guides we produce taking the average settlement figures into account.  We have also based the updated figures on job adverts that have appeared in Gazette in the last year and speaking with our colleagues in Infomatch.

You can look at the guides at http://www.cilip.org.uk/jobscareers/salaries/salaryguides/

If you want more detailed information on a particular job title give us a call or email us on info@cilip.org.uk

My next project is to update the pages on negotiating for pay, so will let you know when they are done.
