The central issue emerging from exclusive CILIP research for delegates attending the RFID in Libraries conference is that the cost of RFID implementation can appear high while the benefits are still uncertain. However, feedback from respondents who have already implemented RFID suggests there are ways of resolving this cost-benefit issue positively.
They suggest that to achieve a positive cost-benefit evaluation, RFID has to be considered as part of a larger programme of change, both infrastructural and organisational, so the opportunity cost of implementation is hedged. This makes spending on RFID worthwhile, as it is then a necessary part of the cost of realising greater strategic benefits.
