Update + Gazette need you!

We're looking for people to apply to join CILIP's Update/Gazette Editorial Panel, as there will be a few vacancies to fill from January onwards. We published notices announcing the call in the November Update and 6 November Gazette (p. 3) but here is a reminder of what we're looking for and how to apply. There's just over a week left till the closing deadline of 4 December, so if you're interested in joining in and helping us to produce ever-better CILIP magazines, read on!

'There are a number of vacancies on CILIP’s Update/Gazette Editorial Panel. We’re particularly looking for members to represent the following areas: schools; youth/children’s; solo (e.g. legal, industrial, voluntary sector); public; and library schools. Membership starts in January 2010 and continues for a maximum of three years.

The panel’s guidelines define its purpose as to ‘communicate the views of members to the editor to ensure members of CILIP receive a relevant and high-quality publication which is in touch with issues of concern and relevance to the profession’.

You need to be a paid-up CILIP member and be able to attend two face-to-face meetings with the editorial teams a year. These normally take place in London, starting in mid-morning and running until mid-afternoon, with lunch provided. In addition, the panel has a lively, closed forum in Communities on CILIP’s website, where members comment on recent issues of Update and Gazette. New members would be expected to take an active part in these online discussions.
Panel members need to be prepared to read each issue of the two publications widely – i.e. not restricting themselves to items on their own sector or specialism.

We are looking for people who are willing and able to:

  • comment constructively on the publications, including the content of articles, the balance of articles across and between issues, and layout and presentation
  • respond to editors’ requests for opinions on proposed articles, i.e. whether the topic is appropriate, timely etc, and for suggestions about possible articles and/or contributors and authors
  • remain aware of developments in their own sector and/or professional specialisms and area of interest in order to contribute to discussions about potential and published content.

Age and level of experience, at either end of the spectrum, constitute no barriers. Those who applied in the previous round of vacancies are more than welcome to apply again.

To apply, please submit brief details of your position, accompanied by a 300-word critique of any recent issue of Update or Gazette – plus of course your contact details. Send to rachel.middleton@cilip.org.uk by 4 December. For further information, call Rachel on 020 7255 0585. Panel Chair Andrew Coburn will also be glad to discuss the panel’s work with prospective panel members (01245 244957; andrew.coburn@essexcc.org.uk).'

As a currently standing member of the panel, I can only say good things about being a member of it!  Off all the meetings I've had with CILIP SIGs and Branches, this is the one I look forward to the most.  Excellent interchange with a broad range of people from all sectors, and the chance to guide CILIP editorial policy.  And one of the best CPD experiences for me in recent years!
