Archived policy statements

These policy statements and briefings are still relevant and while CILIP may not actively advocate in these areas at present, the statements may continue to influence the organisation's positioning on issues.

  • User privacy in libraries: guidelines for the reflective practitioner

    Information and library professionals collect data from their users in order to provide the most efficient and effective service. We must protect the personal data we collect and be very clear why we collect it. Occasionally by law we may be required to give personal data to a third party; and need to ensure that this is justified.

  • Data sharing statement

    In 2009 CILIP published guidelines for library and information professionals about user privacy in libraries. As a result of this work, in 2010, CILIP's Council agreed a statement about data sharing between public sector organisations.

  • Community development and social justice - a policy statement

    Libraries play an important role in how communities shape themselves through the promotion of reading and their provision of free and neutral community space. This statement sets out how libraries contribute to community engagement and social justice and proposes actions that library authorities need to ensure are embedded in their operations to confirm their contribution.
